As Canada marks its first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the stars tell a story that is nuanced, complex and achingly beautiful. The Sun, Mars and Mercury are all in the sign of Libra, signifying justice, balance, reciprocity and harmony. But Mars is uncomfortable here. The God of War is a maverick and a lone wolf. In Libra, he is forced to consider the feelings and needs of the other. Today, Mars forms an opposition to Chiron, the wounded healer. It is an aspect that describes a conflictual relationship leaving deep physical, spiritual and psychological scars. In Aries, Chiron speaks to the wounds of identity, an apt reminder of the multitudinous ways that Canada and the Church stripped indigenous peoples of their lands, language and culture. Chiron’s wounds can never be fully healed. But truth, love and the spirit of goodwill can transform ancient hurts into a wellspring of wisdom and healing for others.
Meanwhile Mercury retrograde in Libra is forming an exact square to Pluto, Lord of the Underworld. Mercury represents our thinking and communication, while Pluto corresponds to death and regeneration. Mercury is referred to as the “psychopomp” because he can guide spirits to the underworld. As he retraces his steps through Libra, we are asked to rethink, review and re-imagine our relationships to both the living and the dead. Pluto can dredge material up from the collective unconscious and from the distant past; he brings repressed memories to light and reveals where the bodies are buried. Pluto is often associated with shame.
As I write this post, Mother Moon is also in a challenging aspect to Pluto. To me, this speaks of power dynamics, manipulation and abuse involving mothers, children, family and the land itself. We cannot forget that genocide, apartheid and oppression are inextricably linked to the exploitation of land and sea. True reconciliation will never be possible without reparations that involve the restoration of lands and resources wherever possible.
Despite the many challenges ahead, the star chart for this important day also has some favourable aspects. The two benefics, Venus and Jupiter, are combining to produce a spirit of idealism, optimism and faith; the Sun is trining Saturn, lending a sense of stability and support to the occasion; and of course, the stellium in Libra suggests a willingness to invest in partnerships based on truth and justice. It is difficult to admit our mistakes and misdeeds but it is necessary. Real relationships are built on trust, truth, and the courage to be wrong. This is an opportunity for all of us to acknowledge the past so we can build a better future together.
Peace my friends,
Lizanne
